Current Employee - Technician in Bagrām (Afghanistan)
Current Employee - Technician in Bagrām (Afghanistan)

I have been working at Exelis as a contractor (more than an year)

Pros

Good pay, good vacation package, benefits are decent,

Cons

Lower management sucks. Instead of showing appreciation and encouraging employees to think outside the box or try to improve the process they find fault and throw them under the bus.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a strong look at your management and leads. The negativity that comes from them creates a hostile work enviroment and DOES NOT PROMOTE A TEAM ATMOSPHERE.

I have been working at Exelis as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

They will probably hire you, and will sponsor the clearances that you may need and can qualify for.

    Cons

ITT Exelis explicitly has no interest in building any long-term teams among their contractors. At a meeting we were told that Exelis plans for 30% turn-over per year, so they expect you to leave after no more than 3 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes, contractors are an asset and can be replaced as easily as any other widgets, but it really is demoralizing to be told so.

I worked at Exelis as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

ITT Exelis is able to get you into the career industry for defense contracting quickly. They follow a "bare minimum" policy for hiring requirements. This means that even if this is your first IT job, you are most probably hired.
Vacations Package may be the best in theater.

    Cons

Middle Management has major downfalls in the following:
    Communications
    Favoritism
    Prejudice
    Retaliation
    Micromanaging
    Incompetence
    Self-Seeking
    Credit Stealing

Upper Management has major downfalls when it comes to those who attempt to address the issues with Middle Management by "Fixing the squeaky wheel" and ignoring legitimate issues in lieu of saving face.

Upward Mobility is nearly nonexistent, unless pre-established connections are used.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiding and ignoring serious issues. You will see that once you lead by example and take personal responsibility, that this company will establish a much greater reputation.
