Pros

Travel
They had money to spend on projects.

Cons

The platform on which Expedia.com ran was holding innovation back. They were working on that when I left but it wasn't moving very fast. This was a couple years ago though.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

My employment ended a couple years ago so I don't feel qualified to offer advice at this point

    Pros

The travel industry is interesting. For the most part, the employees are great at the individual contributor level.

    Cons

The travel industry is very competitive and in a downturn right now. Lots of churn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dara is a strong leader, but the next layers down are weak in most aspects of management.

    Pros

Expedia attracts talented and interesting people - this is a top strength. There's generally a pretty flexible attritude towards working hours and virtual working - you're expected to do your job but how and when you do it is up to you to decide.

    Cons

Expedia's core technology is based on Microsoft, meaning it's quite old and inflexible. It's frustrating to work in a company that is a technology company but whose technology is very inflexible! Also, it seems like a lot of people just accept that this is the way things have to be - perhaps they come from the air industry or Microsoft - instead of other successful web businesses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The learning curve at Expedia is quite high and so is employee turnover. How many people are really being effective in their jobs and what incentives are in place to keep and develop these people?
