I worked at Expedia

Pros

Travel
They had money to spend on projects.

Cons

The platform on which Expedia.com ran was holding innovation back. They were working on that when I left but it wasn't moving very fast. This was a couple years ago though.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

My employment ended a couple years ago so I don't feel qualified to offer advice at this point

I have been working at Expedia

    Pros

The travel industry is interesting. For the most part, the employees are great at the individual contributor level.

    Cons

The travel industry is very competitive and in a downturn right now. Lots of churn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dara is a strong leader, but the next layers down are weak in most aspects of management.

    I worked at Expedia

    Pros

Nice to work for a well-heeled company.

    Cons

    Not creative.
    Not agile.
    Not technically advanced.

and yet they think they are.

The engineers at Expedia are some of the finest I've met, but there simply aren't enough of them. Too many green belts walking around slowing down the Black Belts. The result is a tech platform that is not well matched for web development tempo and an IT departement that is too over worked and under-managed to make life good for product developers.

Beyond that, the company needs to find a clearer voice for its brand, to take a stand as to who its customer is (suppliers or travelers? pick one.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Value your people.
    Take risks. And mean it.
Kick your best 50 people out of the building to rebuild your platform, re-think your marketing strategy, re-imagine your place in the market (tech, business, everything). Start over. You've lost intellectual control of your own plumbing.
