I worked at Expo Design Center part-time for more than 5 years

Pros

My coworkers were among the nicest people I ever met. Working retail is like being an administrative assistant, but with better treatment from coworkers. I learned how to select appliances and plumbing fixtures from the customers. Many customers were lovely. One lovely couple brought tomatoes grown from their garden! I also learned that people should do product research online, not rely solely on sales people -I saw some of my coworkers selling more expensive stuff to boost their weekly sales numbers.

Cons

Retail = low pay, lower raises. Customers can become irate.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just teach how to be better sales people (i.e., how to close the sale), but how to provide the best customer service.

I worked at Expo Design Center full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You get to work with lots of old people who hate their lives

    Cons

That they use a point system for any issues with you being late.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of point system and hire within for management instead of young dumb people from outer space.

It was a great place to start my career because I could make mistakes and learn without being financially penalized.

I worked at Expo Design Center

    Pros

Fun atmosphere, ability to move up in rank/position, each project was different and challenging, and I enjoyed bouncing ideas off of my coworkers

    Cons

Could only work 40 hours per week, so if projects took longer per week to complete, it resulted in poor completion performance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really spend some time getting to know the interior design field to gain a better understanding of true project timeframes
