Working in a company with little control over your future and performance

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time

Pros

Good emphasis on work and life balance. Good projects to work on if your performance is good. Good pension benefits.

Cons

Performance ranking is highly dependent on your supervisor, so you better hope to be lucky. Your career path is determined by factors beyond your control.

Advice to Management

Rating and ranking system is extremely flawed and favors extroverts over introverts, even if introverts are lot more effective at their job.

  1. Attracts highly intelligent workforce, but the best people leave after a few years due to terrible work environment.

    Pros

Many bright and interesting people, challenging work, good place to learn skills and then go on to something better.

    Cons

Good old boy management Poor middle management Politics trumps all Horrible hours Diversity and work-life balance are a myth No training Antiquated computers and software (this was really surprising)

    Pros

Some of the best Benefits and Salary in the industry (and entire private sector).

    Cons

Very cut throat. "UP or OUT" mentality. You're ranked against your peers and the bottom 15-20% are pushed out the door. No work/life balance at all. Be ready to work 50+ hours per week.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at the corporate culture you're creating. If you don't want top talent to jump ship after 3-5 years, look at making some culture changes. You're losing a long term talent battle.
