I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits and compensation, opportunity to develop new skills and experience various parts of the organization, including global assignments. Employees are well-trained, highly capable and often better-positioned for similar assignments when compared with employees from other companies.

    Cons

Most employees are overworked, given constant management focus on efficiency and expense reduction. Work-life balance is thus very difficult given resulting high workload and demands. 40-hour work weeks are rare; 60-hour weeks are the norm. Significant focus on process and internal controls, though important to a point, draw attention away from running the business at times and reduce the ability to adapt to an ever-changing business environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Demand that senior executives model work-life balance to front-line employees for better morale, listen to and work with employees regarding personal considerations and allow the organization to be more flexible in meeting the needs of customers and end-consumers.

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great compensation. Challenging work environment that offers opportunity for quick advancement. Ability to get hands on field experience if desired. Excellent co-workers.

    Cons

Rigid structure that doesn't offer many opportunities for out of the box thinking. A sense that management doesn't value Mechanical Engineering backgrounds as much as other degrees (for both daily team input and for career advancement opportunities). Limited vacation and long hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the values of 'soft' benefits (shorter work hours, comp time, etc.). Younger managers on the 'fast track' should value their employees and focus on their current role instead of positioning themselves for their next job.
