    I worked at ExxonMobil

    Pros

International opportunities, international scope and experience (at least in the marketing group)

    Cons

-VERY political and VERY bureaucratic- an incredibly frustrating culture for people that want to work and get things done
-Slow moving and risk averse, even for Big Oil
-Workforce lacks the levels of diversity seen in other Fortune 500 firms
-Software, etc. is extremely out-dated and difficult to work with
-Pretend to be friendly toward alternative energy but behind closed doors often openly deride all that is not oil/gas

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drop the arrogance. It, combined with the slow moving, conservative nature of your firm and your out-dated software and processes are going to continue to deter the younger generation from applying for jobs with you. As your workforce continues to age and near retirement, you are going to have to make A LOT of changes if you want to attact Gen X and Gen Y as future leaders.

I have been working at ExxonMobil

    Pros

Really great people to work with who are highly motivated and very helpful. Company invests a lot of time and money to train you for the job and doesn't assign you an actual area of responsibility until after several months of training and shadowing another field engineer. Pay and benefits are good as is workplace and work time flexibility.

    Cons

Company does not readily embrace new technology and ExxonMobil IT makes it difficult to get things done. Computers that are provided are slow and cumbersome to use as they are heavily restricted and controlled by IT.

There is a process for everything and lots and lots of paperwork. Often it feels as if they don't really care if the job gets done as long as the paperwork is in order.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those on the front line and don't be afraid to loosen restrictions and controls rather than looking for more rules that bog things down.
