Stable, large and predictable

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Stable, great people, interesting colleagues, important work. Ethical employer with good benefits who won't bother you too much if you just show up each day and put in your time. Move you around enough to develop you, so the work doesn't get too boring.

Cons

I get the feeling that the less I ask questions the happier everyone is. Train smart enough people to do flawless work over and over and over again, and you'll have a great market leader. The ranking system creates a culture of blame, even among good people who genuinely want to be team players.

Advice to Management

Moving to the Woodlands was not a great move to retain young people. Nor is making those young people wait 10 years before they can send an email without manager approval. A little innovation would go a long way in making this place even better.

    Pros

It can be exciting to work on large scale projects with some top people from around the world. Management tends to be open to new ideas. Work-life balance supported by management in a meaningful way. Opportunities for leadership tend to be open to all, regardless of level of experience with the company.

    Cons

Despite being open to new ideas, it can be difficult to change the way things are done. An employee's experience is completely controlled by their immediate line management. Some groups can be very silo-ed. Communication across boundaries is easy, but usually not encouraged by management. No meaningful career discussions with management. Management driven more by politics than technical solutions.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to listen to your staff. Implement 9/80 schedules or communicate how employees can utilize existing policies.
