    Pros

Flexibility, friendly and experienced staff, casual dress and environment, suburban HQ cuts down on city commuter traffic, Mac shop with knowledgeable IT support, good work-life balance, used to have fun events, accommodate telecommuting when able, great office snacks and beverages.

    Cons

They've never had a mission statement since the company was always confused at what direction and services they should offer. Asking the owner about strategic planning vs. asking execs sounded like you worked at two different companies. "HR" rep works offsite and only processes forms, violations aren't uncommon. Poorly managed finances are fitting of the phrase, "they lose the forest for the trees." Staff are rarely approved for training and continuing education. They did not understand that encouraging and investing in employees yields a much higher reward- in projects AND employee morale- than the negative inverse that keeps staff doing just enough to stay off management's radar.

    Advice to Management

Come to a joint consensus of what direction you want the company to go in, finish forming that strategic plan and STICK to it. Invest in your employee's and realize you've got to give a little to get a lot. A lot of amazing talent moved on because they weren't recognized or enabled to realize their full potential. Regular communication, feedback, and employee reviews are a must. Find someone with an HR background that understands business development to help drive the company in a healthy direction- it wouldn't hurt if they can also fill that huge void between upper management and staff.
