Current Employee - Aviation Safety Inspector in Cincinnati, OH
Current Employee - Aviation Safety Inspector in Cincinnati, OH

I have been working at FAA full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Working with industry folks doing jobs I am quite familiar with. I get a chance to help companies out with knowledge obtained from a career in the industry.

Cons

I must violate folks who do not do their job properly, who might sometimes be putting others in jeopardy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let knowledgable folks do what they are good at and do not micro-manage in areas you are not familiar with.

I have been working at FAA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Air traffic controllers have one of the best salaries all around. They have a comfortable environment and receive awesome benefits. if you want to make six figures a year just sitting down. this is the job for you.

    Cons

A highly stressful job. You have almost over 1000 people's live in your hands on a weekly basis. You may work for almost 24 hours sometimes but you get compensated for it.

I have been working at FAA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Stable, predictable, very large organization, few surprises, good local management, and a generally hard working group.

    Cons

Predictably: not very flexible, deciisions are based on funding cycles and not necessarily on what is best for the organization at the time, pay constraints are based upon FAA wide standards so performers are not well recognized, there is difficulty in eliminating poor performers as there is a disincentive for management - lots of work over a long period and then the posibility of no back-fill, budgets are tight so staffing is constrained, and senior management is not well versed in information assurance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

General - education and the knowledge that goes with it is key. It seems to be the first thing cut and the last restored at all levels. Senior technology management seems to be lacking the education in information assurance. Management, in general, obtain their management skills/knowledge later in their management career and do not impart their skills/knowledge to their subordinates so the organization does not grow well from within. Management needs to mentor its new members and those with potential to become managers - do not be afraid of the new people growing and moving upward.
