  1. It's an exciting environment. Always regulatory changes, new drug entities, emergencies to handle.

    Pros

    * Smart, competent people
    * Interesting work
    * Very family friendly
    * Great benefits/retirement

    Cons

    The personality of the Office of the Commissioner (OC), which impacts the rest of the Agency, changes with a new administration. This is no different than anywhere else in government. Sometimes the OC is more controlling in one administration than another (and I mean controlling of the work of the Centers). Also, as with many technical workplaces, you can have a supervisor that knows the science but may not be a good manager. Most are pretty good, though.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to you Center Directors. Include them in at the beginning of the conversation and not at the end where input is solicited but the decision has already been made.

    Pros

    Job security
    Work/Life balance
    Public health mission
    Work at home 2 days per week

    Cons

    Bureaucracy
    Incompetent and lazy employees
    Dysfunctional employees that are bullies - we are told to accept their behavior because "they have always been that way"
    Managers stuck in the 1980's
    Bad science upheld by managers - "that is how we always did it in the past"
    Large percentage of employees who have only worked for the government
    Lack of education funds
    Stagnant salary
    Unfair hiring practices
    Threats of shut downs and salary cuts coming from Congress
    Long commutes

    Advice to Management

    Recognize the benefit of hiring managers with experience in nongovernment regulated industry.
