I worked at FTSE Group full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

FTSE have a huge brand but it's still a relatively small company so there is still some of the small company benefits to working there and they provide gym membership to the best gym in the world!! It's generally a good atmosphere and the other staff are friendly.

Cons

FTSE was in a period of growth and change so they made lots of the 'old guard' redundant which created bad atmosphere. Also, they have so many managers there it's difficult to know who you are reporting to for what. Also depending on who your boss was the working practices differed immensely, some people in our team worked long days with no reward or recognition, it was just expected.

    Pros

    + Free gym
    + Relatively not stressful
    + Some desire of management to make applications "resilient" and more robust but definitely not interested in technology at all
    + Good pay but I guess it makes sense since it's finance after all
    + Free tea/coffee

    Cons

    - Everybody sits closely together in a open plan often noisy office: people walking, talking etc. - hard to concentrate.
    - Rigid and inflexible culture, haven't embraced any modern management techniques: everybody works in the office Monday-Friday, even if you don't talk to your colleagues and do your thing all day; haven't embraced modern technology and its opportunities: distant working, online communication etc.
    - Very "standard" office culture despite claims that it is flexible everyone comes at 08:30-9 and leaves at 5:30-6.
    - Little or non-existent collaboration between different departments (you are on your own island)
    - 2 groups for software engineering - each with their own preferences: one with no documentation and plans and another that likes the waterfall model; needless to say they aren't in a good relationship
    - You cannot download files - no zip files, no exes - you need to file ticket which can take several days
    - The work mode is 1 person - 1 project, one can hardly build big and great things this way
    - One of the greatest (self-)deceptions here is that FTSE officially considers thinks their work day is 7 hours (35 h/week) but no one works 7 works a day, it is more like 9.
    - Total - lack of leadership: even my performance meeting was impromptu
    - Most people are junior in their technical knowledge. A lot of people have left and they continue hiring.
    - A lot of manual work - things based on Excel, manual downloading data from a website, etc.
    - Paid coke and chocolates from a machine
    - Somewhat of a clique environment. I doubt that if you don't get in there you will have a long career here
    - Overall people behave quite reservedly, probably due to the environment (see Advice to Management). It could be months before you get to know your colleague's name who's just 4 yards away. Not a fun environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Articulate the career/growth perspectives both of individuals and the company clearly. Proactive leadership plays a critical role in leveraging the commitment of talent. Evolve the place culturally and take it off the 1980s. Promote positive relationships among team members and engage personally with more frequent and visible interactions that affirm the interdependency of organizational goals and individual career aspirations. Your current style is so distant that cannot promote cohesiveness. Give employees a voice , treat them with dignity and consistency; the current style simply promotes presentism which is everywhere on the floor.
    Define the business objectives AND make sure employees are aware of how their contribution helps in the overall project objectives.
    Employ flexible working - some excellent people would just not fit with the 9-6 schedule but their devotion and knowledge would be something worth keeping. Since no one works 7h a day just stop advertising it. Get a better office, that doesn't feel like call centre. Get some more excellent software engineers to build real systems.
