I have been working at Fairfax County Public Schools

    Pros

Strong sense of "community". People really care about the kids.

    Cons

Hectic, learning too much on too thin a level. Teachers and students both spread too thinly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Students need to decide on a college major in sophomore year, specialize early. In that way, the kids will make a better and more well informed college decision and more knowledgable in their chosen field. The kids will not all need to take calculus, for example, unless they are going into engineering or related field. In this manner, the kids will avoid overstress and overcommitment and ensuing academic trauma, late nights, frustration, confusion, in life. Guidance counselors and parents both need to take the ancient Hippocratic Oath: first of all , do No Harm [what oath medical professionals, doctors, nurses take]. I.e. Do NOT recommend students take AP BC Calculus when they have no interest at all in enginnering-- counselors are often led by their leadership to enourage every child to pursue caluculs, and this is a very hard and difficult class which gives many students nothing but trouble. FCPS students need to enjoy their junior and senior years more and not work so terribly hard academically for college recommendations.
