Pros

You fall in love with the kids no matter how they behave. Great benefits--full time benefits for part time work.

Cons

Although you accrue sick leave based on the hours you work, you limited on the use of it. Some managers need to mind their own business.

Advice to Management

Don't put supervisors in the same pyramid as family.

    Pros

Many professional development oppurtunities, good salary, very good benefits and retirement. Many different types of educational settings from which to choose to work.

    Cons

Very high-pressure. Fairfax County has always been in the national spotlight when it comes to public education. Data and 'number' are often the focus, with administrators passing on the pressure they receive from school board, Assistant Superindendents, etc., onto the teachers. Very difficult to strike a positive work-life balance. Also, very expensive area to live in and raise your own family (Northern Virgina).

    Advice to Management

Consider cons as described above in perspective of how many newer teachers leave their positions within the first few years ( rate of turnover). Notice the locations/work sites where the rate of turnover is higher in any given school year- then, investigate what factors may be contributing to teacher loss and stress. Remember to consider the education of the 'whole child' in relation to supporting teachers at being their best.
