Pros

easy hiring process. good pay and you basically pick your own work days. A good opportunity for college student to earn some decent money.

Cons

It has become more competitive over the years. Hard to get scheduled for at your preferred site/school. You will get no benefits: health, retirement, paid leave.

I worked at Fairfax County Virginia full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

My position provided me with a lot of free training from the get-go. Affordable benefits. Lots of continuing education opportunities. Nice cafeteria and gym in the government building. Lots of opportunities to mingle with other people at New Employee Orientation when you first start.

    Cons

I think a lot of this depends on the specific agency you're hired to work for, but mine was extremely gossipy and unprofessional. Blatant favoritism. Supervisors who shouldn't be supervisors, but are because they're friends with the right people. Constant worrying about budget cuts. A disconnect between my agency's HR department and central county HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at the departments and agencies within the county. Consider making some cuts across the board to every agency. Make the promotional process more competitive. If someone hasn't made an effort to move up or gain more responsibility in the last five years, get rid of them instead of settling for mediocrity.
