I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

Pros

What I like about Family Dollar was the customers are nice (most of them). Great Health Benefits and strong sales company. Easy to move up to management stay in a management position for a lease a year and you can get any job with better pay.

Cons

Very low pay ($9 an hour) for assistant store manager and working 20-35 hours a week. No lunch breaks, no or little vacation time, and no employee discount. I was attracted by a former employee and what did family dollar do.........nothing. They do not care about their employee's safety at all. I HAD 7 RETAIL JOBS IN MY LIFE AND FAMILY DOLLAR IS THE WORST EMPLOYER I HAVE EVER WORK FOR AND KNOW.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better pay for management. Better security. Better payroll.

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible with your schedule, good learning experience.

    Cons

Very cheap company, not much room for advancement. Expect you to work hard and the harder you work the less it seems they appreciate you. It seems like everyone in upper management works on a bonus system controlling strict labor costs and like they say s..t rolls down hill and effects the people working on store level and also effects customer service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The people that make this company are the hard working people at store level. Bonus' for hourly workers and more appreciation would increase moral. Give stores more scheduled hours for employees so customers wouldn't have to wait in long lines and the normal day to day operations of having stores clean and stocked would be addressed and sales would increase. Health benefits are to costly for everyday hourly full time employees.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You can learn about people in poor neighbrhoods. Can move up from asst manager to manager quick due to turnover and lack of security for employes.

    Cons

Management 80 or more hours a week .Not enough time to get all done they request. Most cashiers get more in food stamps then what they make in a month. You have about 5 hours to recver the store at night By the time you get 1/2 done and start the other half the half you finished is already a wreck. To many people running out the door.To many prostitutes, druggies, drug dealers very unsafe stores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More cameras, more security, more payroll, should be a minimum of 2 people in store at all times. If Mr.Levine was so about family he would let his managers actually work 52 hours a week so they could be with theirs.
