Former Employee - Store Manager in Evansville, IN

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Never a dull moment. Never bored. You control your own "box". My district manager was great. Merchandising is flexible to show off your talents. As far as the work itself and people I worked with, it was wonderful.

Cons

Very long hours. Minimum required hours is 52, ends up being a whole lot more. If anyone on your staff calls in, it will most likely be you coming into work to cover. No family/work balance. Benefits are expensive. Many stores are in unsafe areas and need security. Safety and high external theft are real issues.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More support for your store managers in terms of payroll, security and recruiting of good assistant managers. Would suggest overtime after 48 hours. Vacation pay is based on 48 hours. Managers should be required to work 48 hours.

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Qualified talent has the ability to run their own business with little interference from superiors. The sky is the limit for upward mobility to those that are not afraid of hard work and can truly run a successful operation.

    Cons

Amount of time required on the job to be successful. People making core decisions have been removed from the front lines for too long to be as effective as they could be it they were to spend 2-4 weeks a year seeing what the business is really about at the store level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retail is simple. Quit trying to reinvent the wheel.

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

    Pros

FD empowers its employees - notably entry-level - with significant responsibilities which provides great career building experience.

    Cons

Pay is not the best, seagull management style - swoop in when there's a problem and fly out, only to return when the next problem arises.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less in-depth reporting and temperature taking - encourage more action & execution!
