Current Employee - Senior Project Manager in Washington, DC

I have been working at Fannie Mae full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Co-workers, for the most part, are very nice. Middle management sometimes reminds me of Dilbert's boss; senior management is very focused.

Cons

The old adage "who you know is more imporant than what you know" is alive and well.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of just talking about helping homeowners, talk about what will happen to thousands and thousands of employees over the next 5 years as the fed close the company.

    Pros

Close commute. My manager offers a flexible schedule and my team works well together.

    Cons

Still using MS Windows 2003. Technology is archaic and there is no training. Zero professional growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Google search Big Data and Data Science. Move beyond Excel 2003 for BI and analytics.

Former Contractor - Project Manager in Herndon, VA

I worked at Fannie Mae as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Objectivity of consultant's role helps drive employee results and focus which is also easier on departmental politics.

    Cons

High level of governance which takes priority over all other objectives. Difficult to change process surrounding governance. Sign-offs required regardless of logic if it is a governance item.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Decide what is really important (governance vs. delivery) and provide incentives based on those objectives
