High Expectations in Centralized Claims

Office Claims Representative (Former Employee)
Olathe, KS

ProsThis is a job where you get to help people when they are experiencing a life-changing event: an auto accident or damage to their home.
Flexible hours, casual work environment
The training is very good, and they make every effort to help you succeed.
Management is made up of good people who care about the employees.
Lots of fun programs, activities, on-site vendors, raffles, bonuses, and other perks.
Has gone through a series of organizational hiccups over the past couple years, but is poised to be a great place to work for at least the next 5 years.

ConsHigh expectations once you are out of training. Some succeed; many fail.
Fluctuating volume of work. When it's busy, be prepared to work overtime. When it's slow, be prepared to find something productive to do.
If you don't like making phone calls or answering your phone, pick a different job.
Because your customers have just gone through a life-changing event, they can be difficult to deal with at times. Be ready to deliver bad news, and to explain your reasons.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more closely to your employees who are burnt out or not meeting expectations. You have lost a lot of good people by not doing this.
Plan ahead better for major organizational changes. This is something that has changed over the past decade; management used to be very aware of burn-out potential and kept hiring to reduce the per-employee workload. For current and future changes: prepare for burn-out of employees who have to pick up the slack while everyone else is training on new procedures. Don't be afraid to hire more people--a lot more. Remember that adding work to people who are at or near capacity does not help the employees, the customers, or the company. Once all these changes are in place, it really will be a better place to work than it is now; but do what you can to keep your tenured employees through the changes.
