A good place to work, but bad people to work for

Former Employee - Package Handler in Grand Forks, ND

I worked at FedEx Ground

Pros

Nice PT job for college student
Paid Weekly
Transfer Opportunities

Cons

Management obviously. There was one good Senior Management but he transferred and things went to hell from there.
They are very sexist there. If you're a hot girl you will get your way, come in late and never get wrote up or fired, men always get hassled and fired, either way it should be equal.
If you're not valuable you won't get respected by management.
One manager does everything from the book and as no personality which makes it hard to work for.
One only hires hot women and doesn't care about their resume. You could work for McDonalds and show up at the interview and be hired without experience.
The management likes to gang up when firing, they will monitor any little thing you do to get rid of you.
They allow drunk workers on the dock and not send them home and in one scenario, they awarded one for employee of the month.
Employees will threaten each other and almost fight, management doesn't do anything about it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up some and stick to valuable workers instead of low class workers. Change your attitudes.

I have been working at FedEx Ground

    Pros

Company is generally admired by outsiders. People tend to be impressed when they discover I am a manager for Fedex. Pay and benefits are good.

    Cons

Hub dock managers often face nearly impossible expectations and are held accountable for failure. Package Handlers are sent home when there is still much work to be done. Managers are then required to finish the Package Handlers' work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Productivity standards for the sorts are a joke. It is an integrity issue to dismisst the package handlers and have the managers clean up huge messes to save productivity points. We tell PGH we ran productive, which is a lie, because the Package Handlers were nowhere to be found for the cleanup. Productivity standards need to be lowered so that sorts run cleaner, scanning improves, damages are reduced, and quality of life improves for everyone involved.

I have been working at FedEx Ground

    Pros

    good corporate culture
    worldwide network
    well-recognized company
    tuition reimbursement for management
    decent medical benefits
cooperation between corporate and local offices
    no unions

    Cons

lack of upward mobility/promotion unless you are willing to move
policies and procedures are not very "cutting edge"
no merit raises or 401K match for this year

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to your lower levels of management. Stop managing the company from an ivory tower. Policy trumps reality any day of the week.
