I worked at FedEx Office full-time

    Pros

This company is an ok place to start for someone with a high school education who is outgoing, is comfortable with computers, working hard and likes working with the public.

    Cons

This company is not a great company for advancement or an actual career. The pay & management is poor given all that it asks of its employees. Those with the best work ethics were often passed over instead of promoted.
Management was often not honest about hours, wages and schedules as well. Management is often poorly trained.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Here's what I saw:

There needs to be more appreciation of the employees overall, and management needs to look for the talent they already have in these employees and develop it. Then they won't have to feel that their "bench" is shallow. I saw a great deal of untapped, unappreciated talent while I was there.

There needs to be more realistic and honest communication from the top down. If you lose the trust of your team, you lose they buy-in from the team, which means you get less productive output from your team. Better and more extensive management training would also help a great deal.

Part of what you are selling is the service, so you should treat the employees who are providing that service like a valuable commodity. Be honest about what to reasonably expect for hours per week, wages, and schedules. Look for and encourage the "good" instead of waiting to pounce on the "bad".

Your customers are your business. Be more honest with your customers. If they feel that all you want is to take as much of their money as possible, they will come in less, and you will make less.

Top management would benefit greatly by coming to various regions and actually working in the stores for a week or so (at each location) right along with the team. Regions vary, customers vary, real-world situations with your business vary. See what really happens and then reform the business plan for this, rather than an unrealistic hypothetical. Seriously consider "Undercover Boss" with the attitude of looking to make positive changes and seeing the company in action, rather than trying to catch a problem and treating it negatively.

Listen to your employees. Value their input. Then revise the model to something more workable.
