I have been working at Federal Government full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

The average salary in my chosen profession often is quite low. Because of equal work, equal pay initiatives, I get paid very well. On the other hand, I've worked on very important national and international projects. So the work can be exciting. And there may be an opportunity to make a real difference. Also, they are much more likely to hire and promote African Americans, Latinos and Hispanics, women and the disabled more often than the public sector.

Cons

The people are generally not particularly well-educated in their official jobs. If you can get in the right group--it can be exhilarating to work on important national issues. And you can meet and work with absolutely brilliant people. On the other hand, you could get stuck working with or for the 2/3 who seem to be the antithesis of creative. I mean the graphics people would work with hammers and chisels rather than computers if someone sometime in the late 90s dragged them kicking and screaming into the real world.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try planning for a change. Try keeping up with and seeing today's reality. Try hiring educated, maybe even accomplished specialists and not deciding, "Poof, you're a photographer!"

Approves of CEO
