Pros

People move around a lot so there are plenty of chances for opportunities.

Cons

The managers tend to micro-manage a lot. The managers will do anything to get ahead even if that means making others look bad. The employees are treated like a commodity, meaning if you cannot do it I will have no trouble finding a replacement. Employees tend to be paid below market value.

Advice to Management

Start teaching managers to value their employees. This includes less mirco-managing, more training, better pay, and more flexible schedules.

    Pros

Stable, laid-back environment. Excellent 401k matching. Decent overall compensation.

    Cons

There is a group called Workplace Investing within Fidelity which has many loss making businesses. Sr. Management is solely focused on containing costs in those organizations by limiting pay raises and promotions. Young aspiring employees in this group have no way to get promoted/grow unless people above them leave. Those who reached a certain level are happy to coast along- they won't leave because they are happy where they are. The result is no motivation - no incentive and hence no innovation.
HR is useless by the way - they don't know what their roles and responsibilities are.

    Advice to Management

Churn is healthy for the organization - promote that. Same person looking at the same problem for 10 years - gives you the same result. You gotta have a different person looking at those problems.

Cost containment will help no one - it will only make the junior employees leave and create an inverted pyramid organization. If the organization is top heavy do whatever you need to do to fix that but get the innovation engine started. Incentive and motivation are key to an organization. If there is no scope for growth then there is no incentive to innovate.

    Pros

    Salary and bonuses are nice

    Cons

Environment is horrible. You are a resource not a person. Its all about self promotion. If you are a technical person, you will likely be managed by people who have no technical background. No HR presence.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate your middle management to make sure they are doing the best for the company instead of themselves. Let HR actually have a presence and some power to at least investigate areas of high turnover.
