Pros

Most knowledgeable associates I have worked with. Great benefits. Accomodating to non-work situations. Flexibility to work at home when needed. Room for advancement.

Cons

Volume of work can be overwhelming.

    I have been working at Fidelity Investments full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    I will say that the Series 7 training that they provide is excellent. Ok for a year, if it's your first job out of college.

    Cons

    Upper management does a great cheer-leading bit but the real world is quite different. Every move you make is recorded and monitored, if you make a rookie mistake they make you feel terrible, very little praise without a "but". Lot's of nitpicking criticism. You have no time to socialize because every minute is accounted for. The work itself is ok but quite a grind when you average 50 calls a day with only 2 15 min. breaks. Grueling for little pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You work people to death, for sub-par wages. Then you criticize and berate employees for every little thing. The only reason you have good retention is that the economy is terrible for jobs. When this changes you will see a mass exodus.

    Pros

    Fantastic learning opportunities. Lots of training opportunities. Superb on the job experiences. Great systems and infrastructure. Plenty of very smart people (though not everyone). Like any place, you can always find good decent people whom you will become friends with. There is so much that the company invests in to support its growth, its customers and its employees. A very dynamic company, in many cases cutting edge in its industry. Very good pay for most people - in some cases, truly outstanding pay. And great benefits for everyone.

    Cons

    The culture is insidious. Terribly dysfunctional, paricularly the more senior you become. Its simply not about how well you do your job - many people have realized that doing well and being rewarded is as much about making the other person look bad to make you look better. If getting ahead for you means throwing your co-worker under the bus, then this is the place for you. Its such a shame, because the company could be so great, but the culture of fear is simply gripping the place so that people are terrified, yet in many cases they are paid so well that they are equally afraid to leave. Someone who left once told me that working there was like being in an abusive relationship - and you don't realize it until after you have left. So many examples of people who on one day are viewed as superstars, and the next day they are suddenly viewed at the bottom of the heap - in many cases this happens when their manager leaves, and the former manager loved them, but the new manager doesn't value them and wants them gone. So, you come to realize that the ball can drop on you at any moment. I remember one executive saying, verbatim, "we all have a bullet with our name on it, and its only a matter of time until it hits you." Senior management used to be very inspiring years ago, but no longer - it really changed for the worse around 2008 and from what I saw and continue to hear, it keeps going in the wrong direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of your forced distribution performance system. You say you don't have it, but that is not true. Reward true merit, at all levels, period. Figure out a way to re-introduce the value of true integrity in your managers, support those who uphold it, and stop rewarding those who don't. Most importantly, stop rewarding managers who make their bosses look good and do good work but step on others and create harm for others along the way. All of this is going to be very hard for you to do because it will mean re-inventing your culture.
