I worked at Fidelity Investments full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Opportunity to change roles within massive company structure.

One of the most stable investment companies in America if you want a long career with them.

Competitive benefits and generous 401k profit sharing are a big boost to your personal retirement goals.

Company culture is focused on providing the best value to customers and even when you dig deep their offering bests most major competitors.

Cons

Corporate compliance and legal supervision are excessive and result in sometimes non-sensical or even contradictory policies.

Frequent policy changes due to complexity (see above) results in information overload. Planners and advisors should be focused on that without having to become compliance specialists.

Technology for repairs behind the times. No daily run of your business until after the fact. A client wants to wire money out? You won't hear about until after the money is gone. Lead system is better than in the past but still clunky compared with even many start-up RIA software. Too many programs required to plan with clients efficiently.

Decisions seem to be made without consulting reps enough first.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify - why are there over 75 application/tools listed on a planning reps home screen when RIAs regularly manage with 1-3 programs?

Embrace technology faster by leveraging our scale. We still have front line reps that cannot email clients? When clients are budgeting for income planning we give them an old paper workbook when Mint.com can collect it all in half the time?

Client communication policies are excessively strict. Stop babying your representatives in this regard. Client email program is terrible still and many reps cannot email at all?

Middle level management is awful with seemingly no accountability for poor back office performance in particular.

Major disconnect between what managers claim will get you promoted and what actually gets you promoted especially in branches. Don't listen to any manager advice about being a good planner, engaging clients, utilizing business partners, and referring clients to the right people. Just close more business than everyone else.
