It's one of the only places to work in this city.

I worked at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads

    Pros

FMG is large, which means it has a lot of positions you could fill. It's also recession-proof, as people who are laid off try to make money by selling jewelry made from FMG components.

    Cons

The professional advancement seems to be based on arbitrary criteria - it's not based on skill or effort. The pay is horrendously low in accordance with industry standards (my new job pays TWICE what FMG paid and it's still not at the industry standard)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I can't blame you for paying so little to your employees, as you can obviously get away with it, being the only major employer in Grants Pass, but as soon as another large company comes along, I wouldn't be surprised to see a huge number of resignations. Get your act together before it's too late.

Fire Mountain Gems is a terrible place to work. Work at your own risk.

I have been working at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads

    Pros

Free turkey and/or holiday gift card
    pay check
    Company picnic
Sure, the pay is not the greatest; then again, there is nothing else in Grants Pass, OR

    Cons

Company thrives on Micromanagement of their employees
You don't get paid to think, just do and shut up.
Absolutely does not care about employees or their families. You are just an expense.
"If you don't like your job, go somewhere else - there is someone else waiting for your job"
    Promises made are not kept.
Managers are able to come in late, leave early and spend time at meetings. Hourly employees who carry the work load would be terminated if they did what management gets away with. Double standard.
Mandatory overtime; however, if after a holiday its straight time and you are required to come in and fill orders; otherwise your fired.
Communication between upper and lower levels is non existent. Its a one way flow.
If you put notes in the suggestion box or talk to owners or upper management, you'll be fired.
Insurance is the worst. If you get sick too many times; you'll be fired because the number of claims are too high and drives up the company's insurance costs.
Come to work sick and be sent home with no pay. Get to many occurrences and your toast.
Very high turn over rate. Really, look at it before you consider being yet another statistic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The bottom line is simple. If Fire Mountain Gems treated their employees better it would be a better place to work. Treat your employees as though they were your customer. Morale is lower than you think - you just don't hear people talk about it or they disappear. The owners are way out of touch with what actually happens around the company. When is the last time they actually talked to their employees? CEO's belief is to do it my way or the high way.
