I worked at Fireman's Fund Insurance

Pros

If you want the opportunity to be at a financial services company going through transformation, this is a place for you as there is a lot of change and resources are needed. The company does do some community give back, and they are trying to improve. Also, there is opportunity down the road to work in the parent company in Europe. Lastly, the CEO has a vision and has brought in some good senior managers.

Cons

The work life balance with so much change ongoing is difficult to achieve, and because resources have been so constrained - and continue to be - there is a lot of stress. Expect to do your job and then some, and also to not always interact with people who have a throuough enough understanding of what needs to happen - even thogh they may have responsibility.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to get a better handle on planning, needs to set realistic expectations around when large scale projects will be delivered along with what their scope and risk are. They've also got to break down the siloes and build a real customer focused culture.

I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance

    Pros

Fireman's Fund is a great company to work for. If you work hard and network with management there is room for growth potential. Salaries are competitive, sometimes a little lower than competitors, but the bonus package is much better. Up to $10,000 bonus per year, or more depending on your job.

    Cons

Just like most insurance companies, days are always busy. It seems like having a few more people on the ground would be beneficial to most teams. When someone leave a team (quits or moves to a different unit) it takes a long time to replace the person. Sometimes 1-3 months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to seek employee opinions and perspectives when determining new initiatives and when developing new programs.

I have been working at Fireman's Fund Insurance

    Pros

The company has great benefits with regards to time of and benefits. The new office is state of the art with work out facilities and newer furniture.

    Cons

Where to start...at first everyone seems really happy to see you, then they start to pile on the work. Goals and metrics are set by upper management who has not handled a claim in the environment that they have created. If the metrics are not met then prepare thy self for rountine meetings where you get to play "Guess why your behind" with your supervisor. Everyone in the office is aware of the negative impression that has been left on the St Louis market by the office management and eventually the company will be unable to hire new staff. Good employees and people are burned through like they are disposable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cherish your employees which is your most valued asset, do not beat down ideas and embrace change. Attempt to become modern and adopt new ideas.
