Current Employee - Service Manager in Austin, TX

I have been working at Firestone Complete Auto Care full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The pay is competitive ,the company has a clear understanding and directive on how to take care of customers the right way. They sell a great product that you can stand behind and not just a volume driven discount store.

Cons

Your only as good as your last month the company has a clear vision on how to take care of employees but it doesn't mean that's how you get treated by the district staff they only care about you as long as they like you or like I said if your in the good o'l boys club but if they don't like you, your ignored regardless of your job performance. Many times they only recognize those they like even when others perform at the same level and when speaking to employees they use inappropriate language that is unprofessional.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have mid level management take a sensitivity class, I understand there is a job that has to be done and the expectations is to sell sell sell but at what cost and when is it ok to treat your employees like dirt and threaten their jobs because you can't force a customer to get a Firestone credit card .

    Pros

Decent pay, bonus program was good. I did learn a lot about the automotive industry while I was there.

    Cons

Lots of hours and lack of respect from district management in regards to your time off. They hold a portion of your bonus to keep you there. If you leave the company you forfeit that money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand and be compassionate in regards to our personal time and time off.

I worked at Firestone Complete Auto Care full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You get to experience first hand why auto repair was NEVER meant to be retail-oriented. When you walk into a repair shop, the first person you see shouldn't be a salesman.

    Cons

As a technician, whatever base rate is agreed upon at time of hire will be meaningless. Book times for jobs are so low, you could be hired on at $17+ per hour and still only take home minimum wage. This is all part of the company's strategy to make maximum profit; gouge the customer and pay you as little as possible.

The company's turnover rate is so high, management will lie through their teeth to get you onboard. Your pay will be misrepresented, and "some Saturday's" turns into every Saturday. Expect 60 hour work weeks, while being discouraged and reprimanded for taking a lunch break. Expect to earn minimum wage. If you are a technician, expect to be excluded from incentive and bonus programs, despite your skills and labor being used to reach goals for front-end staff.

Very few holidays off. The same holidays where you'll be held captive at the store, not making any money, due to having no customer cars to work on because nobody comes in for service on the holiday.

You will probably have 3 different service managers in 1 year.

Dispatching system is horrible. Each tech has a hook on a board and waiter work orders will keep getting piled on one after the other, ensuring that you never get a lunch.

Upper-level managers will degrade and belittle you.

No pride in your work due to being forced to make needless upsells and then having to cut corners to avoid getting raped by the book time.

Upper-level managers are clueless about cars, and can't recognize when a job should be turned away. All they see are dollar signs.

The combination of low book times and only a 30hr guarantee for 40 clock hours results in the absurd position of literally working an entire day for free. Managers can't understand why you're calling in sick; your paycheck is the same whether you show up or not.

Horrible hours, no time for yourself or family. If you're scheduled o close at 7PM, and a customer shows up at 6:59 wanting 3 hours of work, you're forced to stay and complete the work.

Long term employment results in depression and thoughts of hopelessness.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Sell the company.
