I worked at First Transit

Pros

Job was not extremely taxing, worked with some nice people, was trusted to make decisions and grow as a team leader and gain supervisory experience.

Cons

Home life not respected, working equipment not always available. The transportation units were poorly maintained. There was no night or weekend differential.

I have been working at First Transit

    Pros

This is a good job! The work is easy, all that is required is common sense and some courtesy for people. A good sense of humor works to your advantage also. Wonderful if you like to be "outdoors" but don't want to be exposed directly to inclement weather!

    Cons

Sometimes you ended up coming in incredibly early. Sometimes the roads weren't cleared as well as they should have been (at least in the Driver's opinion). Some members of management were not very respectful of those of us who Performed the work out in the streets! Dispatch was run by a different entity and there was no recourse for drivers when treated poorly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the drivers! They are the eyes and ears of Dispatch, and of management. The prevalent attitude of "being out to "bust" drivers" (one former supervisor actually said this) is not helpful. Helping drivers does not include finding reasons to discipline a driver. Helping a driver is the "respectful discussion of performance matters and finding solutions to those issues!"

First Transit puts the almighty dollar ahead of all else, spreading resources as thin as possible.

I have been working at First Transit

    Pros

Working for First Transit in the TriMet Paratransit Lift program is very rewarding because you are truly making a difference in the lives of people you serve.

    Cons

They have three paratransit bus yards contracted with TriMet in Portland, OR. Two are union yards, one is not. They aquired all three yards differently and operate them differently. Different pay structures and different discipline policies. Make sure that you apply at one of the union yards or you could get laid off or have a wage freeze put into affect. The union yards, you can't get fired or laid off for no or little reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask for some feedback from drivers about what kinds of bids to put together as far as days off, hours etc and you'll have a lot more drivers satisfied with what days and hours they need to work.
