I have been working at FirstEnergy

Pros

Good compensation and benefits for the area. Good job security in some positions. Extensive training is provided for some positions. Opportunities for advancement within the company.

Cons

Long hours -- there is no work/life balance. Management makes impulsive decisions with poor results and blames workers. There is generally an adversarial relationship between workers and management.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees at all levels with respect. Try to retain employees who do good work and have extensive experience. Listen to input from workers when making decisions. Make decisions that will be beneficial in the long term rather than doing things that look good now but will backfire in the future.

I worked at FirstEnergy as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Worked in small teams on highly technical development projects. Was able to see the full company and felt interconnected to the challenges that the business faced. Always felt as though contribution was valued.

    Cons

Small team structure, extremely challenging political climate for energy producers using coal fired production. Additional challengs from operating in recent deregulated markets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue working to bring top talent into the organization. Ensure that employees feel connected, avoid confrontational managemnt styles as this lessens the value from many of the employees.
