    Pros

If you are looking to start in the hotel industry and want to gain some experience in a high-end 5 star property then Fisher Island is a great place to start. Although the hotel property is not very large the members and residents make up for the work load that is missing, working here will definitely teach you about the ins and outs of the working in a hotel, as well as a resort.

    Cons

The island does not recruit well, the HR department has to do better with selecting the right candidates for the departments, they don't hire the right fit in most cases which cause lots of inconsistency in different areas. Also for this to be a 5 star hotel and resort the pay rate is not very competitive at all. Considering what other properties within a 30 mile radius of Fisher Island, they pay well under the average nearest the minimum. Although the work load was not bad here at all, this has probably been one of the worst companies I have ever worked for.

    Advice to Management

Be more interactive with the employees, decision making needs to involve people that it actually affects not only decided upon by the Equity Members. Fisher Island has lots of potential to be great if it was managed more effectively.

  2. Okay, if you avoid the day shift.

    Pros

If you work on Fisher Island in any capacity, you won't be able to ignore the beautiful setting. The island landscape is designed to resemble a kind of paradise, and you will likely have access to the golf carts--the preferred means of travel on the island, which are fun to jet around on. I found the hotel staff's pay to be about average for the corresponding positions. Most of the day-time front-room staff worked with the expectation that they would come by tips and commissions, which at times are sizable.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the employees live under constant fear of the Members/Owners of this private club, the people who populate the island. At it's worst, the culture is that of a slave plantation. If a member wants you to do something, no matter how far that thing falls outside of your job description, you are expected (by your direct superiors and coworkers alike) to do it. These members are the super rich and those desperately posing as such, and their treatment of the staff at times is inhumane. Some members are very lovely people, though (in fairness).

    Advice to Management

My advice would have been not to fire all of the long-time employees who maintained the hotel's charm, but from what I've heard it seems it's too late for such advice.
