I worked at Five Star Quality Care full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful residents, good benefits: health insurance is pretty good. Paid time off program with option to cash out.

    Cons

Company is not very organized and senior management seems not to care. In 2 years, the SNF Dallas location has gone through 10 Director of Nursing, 3 MDS Coordinators, 3 Assistant Director of Nursing, 3 Administrators, 3 Executive Directors, 3 Activity Directors, 3 Maintenance Directors. No one from the regional or corporate level seems to care that turnover is soo high. When a position turns over, no one from the regional level comes to the community to ensure things are running smoothly. When they finally hire managers, the managers receive NO training. Not sure what the regional managers do. They surely are not in the community doing walk throughs. When an employee writes to corporate, they are looked down upon. Corporate in Newton, MA does not seem to care. They do not handle problems or concerns, they foward them to Regional HR and local community to handle which leads to some bias. This process discourages employees from coming forward with concerns. There tends to be some retaliation for expressing concerns. The Dallas SNF community received a zero deficiency survey and no one in the local community recieved any type of bonus, not even the Administrator nor the Director of Nursing. This is almost unheard of! There are also very FEW opportunities for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more training for all positions, especially managers. Not everyone is familiar with "The Five Star' way! Also, Regional Directors should be doing a lot more! Get more involved. Walk the communities. Meet with employees and residents. Show that you care (if you really do care)! Create a bonus structure for managers!
