I have been working at Food Lion full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

nice co-workers, hard working people

Cons

company has no regard for employees, poor pay, full timers are lucky to get 40 hrs unless a storm comes and then you are used..funny how suddenly there are hours available then, poor upper corp management. Health Ins used to be decent when using BC/BS, but this year some people did not have the option of BC/BS any longer and have been switched to Aetna. Its terrible, paying more out per paycheck than what they covered for one Dr visit, my prescription cost has sky rocketed and they won't approve some things even though the Dr ordered it-give us BC/BS back!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN to your employees!!! People want to perform well, most have a hard time because they fear repercussions if they speak up about something. Treat them with consideration and respect. Don't expect them to give all for nothing. If you value your employees, treat them well. Give merit raises, give cost of living raises.. seems everything goes up but the salary. If people are forced to work more than one job, they can't perform well. Do corporate/employee workshops, meetings monthly or every few..just to see how things are and to provide moral boost and training if needed. Provide a forum where people can speak candidly without fear of their job being threatened. Offer incentives and awards for people doing a noticeably good job. It doesn't have to be much, but recognition inspires. Offer awards to employees for customer related good deeds..give customers a place to make comments and use those for feedback in ways to continue good service or improve. Often employees hear second hand whats happening in the company when they should be hearing it from the top first. Change the scheduling to every 2 wks. People do have lives outside of Food Lion. Juggling schedules, child care, transportation etc. causes conflict and hardship which then trickles into their job performance. Is it really that hard to schedule out for 2 wks? Exp- Schedule is put up on Fri and new week starts that Sun- only gives 2 days to plan the week.. bet there would be less call outs if there was more time given to manage personal schedules. Have consideration! Give enough hrs to employees to get necessary work done in their depts. For exp- if frozen and dairy are combined, you can't expect one person to do the work of 2 and rotate and keep product available, etc- all on less than 40 hrs. Keep in mind some depts. are bigger in other stores, what works well in one store isn't the same in the one a few miles down the road. Treat each one according to its needs. Use your security cameras- monitor them regularly- you are placing your employees on dangerous ground by expecting them to intervene. Hire a security person for big shrink stores and press charges on the people you do catch! Get a generator and keep it serviced for power outages!!! It doesn't seem wise for ANY company to risk tons of product going bad because the power went out..not to mention the need to have people work extra hrs to pull product, then to restock when new product arrives. That is really a no brainer.. and with hurricane season and bigger storms now, it appears the company will take huge losses because of this! I could go on and on..just another reason to have a place for employees to speak out.

It is a job - that is what you must understand

I have been working at Food Lion part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - This a decent place to, as the title of my review says, have a JOB. I have read petty negative reviews about customers being mean, managers having favorite employees, etc. Unfortunately, things like that will happen almost everywhere. If you are looking for a job where you can "hang out" after you leave your classes at school, where your main focus is making friends and socializing, then you can expect to have some problems.
    - If you are the type of person doesn't mind repetitive, predictable tasks, then you will be okay with a cashier position. I personally don't mind it (my previous job involved a lot of poor communication in a busy, unpredictable environment).

    Cons

    - You will most likely start at minimum wage even if you have previous experience in retail.
    - Work schedules are only made for the current week. They are rarely made before Friday...and the new week begins on Sunday. This means that you usually have two days (Friday and Saturday) to make any plans for the upcoming week. This can a problem if you have another job, have children who will need baby-sitting/daycare arrangements, are sharing one car with a spouse, need to make arrangements to have someone give you a ride, etc.

    Pros

Stable Company. Provides me with a good wage. Opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Store Management is often disconnected. Lack of communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to get all the stores on the same page. You can have two stores within 10 miles of eachother but the rules and policies are not followed the same within the two stores.
