Former Employee - Assistant Manager in Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Forever 21

Pros

Surrounded by cute clothes, and get to see all the new shipments come in
Always something to do
Being assistant manager was fun (being an associate wouldn't be much fun)

Cons

30 minute lunch breaks (needs to be 1 hr!)
Never enough hours to give to associates/not enough floor coverage
Getting out at 12am (2am during holiday season)
Dealing with customers... the ones that are rude
Ridiculous amounts of go-backs each night

Advice to ManagementAdvice

As an assistant manager, I know that everyone has their own management style. Sometimes its the manager, sometimes the problem lies with the associate. Some stuff is out of managements control and is decided upon by corporate.

I have been working at Forever 21

    Pros

You gain a lot of experience here, and there are many different areas in which you can work within a store, including the fitting room, stock, on the sales floor, a cashier, a manager, or a visual merchanidser. I would only take this job as a last resort, and as a stepping stone to a better job in retail.

    Cons

There is no employee discount, only 10%. The managers play favoritism, it took me years to achieve the high position I have today, other new sales associates get promoted within weeks of being hired. If you call out, the managers may punish you by slashing your hours. The managers are often unprofessional, disorganized, and incompetent. They are hypocritical and set rules for everyone which they themselves do not follow (For example, no employee holds, but the managers continue to hold things for themselves). They often gossip about other employees as if they are in high school! Plus you should check the company's history, their reputation for stealing other people's designs and refusing to provide factory workers with minimum wage...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up and get a life! It's just retail...

I have been working at Forever 21

    Pros

Great dress code- ability to express yourself.
Great management staff- fun and understanding.
Fast paced environment - needless to say I'm never without something to do.
Set-up of store is constantly changing so the atmosphere always seems new.

    Cons

Breaks are too short- should at least be 15 instead of 10.
Horrible schedule setup/ lots of cutting of hours.
Discount is incredibly cheap (almost all other clothing stores give at least 20%).
Too much shipment and not enough time/space to process it.
    Pay rate is awful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of having the managers hire new employees you should give those hours to the CURRENT employees working there- it's not fair that we get our hours cut so drastically. Raise the discount- for the amount of work we do we should at least be rewarded with more than 10%. Bump up the pay rate. Train employees better. Extend the breaks a little bit. Overall, treat your employees better and more of us will be happier to stay.
