I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Work with friendly people everyday, be involved in great projects small and large, support American mined metals, earn a great wage along with awesome benefits, tremendous opportunity for growth.

Cons

At the mine site where I worked, there was no clear cut path for growth and development. Department leadership was not very experienced and seemed to receive little support from upper management. Several engineers left as a result.

Advice to Management

Plan ways to develop your technical talent and staff through mentoring and consistent leadership.

    Pros

    - Great salary and bonus structure - 401(k) plan is superb - Business is profitable and has made major acquisitions in the past year.

    Cons

    - Some projects seem to be selected independently of core business needs - Political structure can be difficult to navigate for some employees - High ratio of contractors to employees

    Advice to Management

Focus on increasing the communication throughout all tiers of the organization - great ideas exist in some of the lower level employees but are frequently suppressed by the voice of upper management

I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Benefits -Work/life balance -Technology support offered -Company perks(fitness center, beverages, catered lunches, etc.)

    Cons

-Way too many directors and senior management -"Entry level" positions are outsourced to contractors -Many upper employees are reluctant to use the technology offered

    Advice to Management

Create more entry level positions and hire full time employees to fill them. Promote from within the company and stop hiring managers/directors from the outside. This will alleviate confusion and deviation from the department's mission.
