I have been working at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

the work can be challenging, which will keep you busy and never bored with nothing to do. most of the employees are really friendly and easy to get a long with....i've made some great friends at Freeport

Cons

your reward for good work is more work. hr has a stranglehold on job descriptions and grades with little wiggle room for managers to improve their direct reports' pay. bonus structure is based on a bell curve as though we are in college, with an emphasis on placing people in an "average" category despite whatever effort they put forth. freeport is full of "yes men" and upper management is completely out of touch with employees. there is significant resentment in the workforce due to management and upper management not recognizing good work that employees do and not pushing for appropriate compensation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

start paying more attention to what is going on around there. find out how projects are actually going instead of relying on "yes men" for status reports. reward those who go out of their way to do a good job rather than allowing them to become jaded, run down, and frustrated.

I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    -Benefits
    -Work/life balance
    -Technology support offered
-Company perks(fitness center, beverages, catered lunches, etc.)

    Cons

-Way too many directors and senior management
-"Entry level" positions are outsourced to contractors
-Many upper employees are reluctant to use the technology offered

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more entry level positions and hire full time employees to fill them. Promote from within the company and stop hiring managers/directors from the outside. This will alleviate confusion and deviation from the department's mission.

I worked at Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work with friendly people everyday, be involved in great projects small and large, support American mined metals, earn a great wage along with awesome benefits, tremendous opportunity for growth.

    Cons

At the mine site where I worked, there was no clear cut path for growth and development. Department leadership was not very experienced and seemed to receive little support from upper management. Several engineers left as a result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan ways to develop your technical talent and staff through mentoring and consistent leadership.
