I worked at Fry full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Great people. Interesting and fairly diverse clients. Plenty of work that tends not to be monotonous. A history of e-commerce leadership.

Cons

High attrition due to a change in culture. Parent company, Micros-Retail is imposing old-style corporate-think that expects equipment to be more valuable and irreplaceable than talented employees.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

People need to be invested in. If you wish to have any standing in e-commerce you need to be able to capitalize on new technology and rapid projects. Invest in product development processes and try to keep up with industry-standard software and tools.

I have been working at Fry

    Pros

The organization is flat, work environment is friendly and casual. Compensation is good and the nature of work allows plenty of room for creativity.

    Cons

Flat organization means lesser opportunity to get big promotions and climb the corporate ladder. Some times, unrealistic deadlines communicated to the customer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management needs to do a better job with Accounts and setting client expectations. Management also needs to put a greater focus on product rather than just delivery.

Corporate culture only concerned with the bottom line

    I worked at Fry

    Pros

Fry does employ some very talented developers. You're always going to find someone willing to spend some time to help when you're stuck, need something explained, or just to bounce ideas off of. If you're looking to break into the e-commerce field, Fry could be a good place to start. You'll be exposed to large clients with diverse requirements.

    Cons

Though the sign on the outside may say Fry, make no mistake that this company is now MICROS. The culture now reeks of that large, corporate mentality that's only concerned with the bottom line. Emphasis is placed on working as many billable hours a week as possible. There is no real mentorship for junior or senior-level developers, nor is there any involvement in the very active Ann Arbor developer community. Though management pays lip-service to Fry being an innovative company, the projects are all cookie cutter and almost no investment is made in investigating anything new. The proprietary e-commerce framework used for every project is out-dated, missing features that clients expect, and doesn't scale well for some clients' requirements, thus leading to poorly built solutions that are difficult to maintain. Management does constantly ask for feedback, but never acts on any of the feedback received.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't assume that what has worked for you in the past will continue working in the future. This industry is constantly evolving, and you'll die if you don't evolve with it. Act on the feedback you're getting from your employees. You've hired really talented people who all have great ideas -- let them contribute.
