A good job in theory, but not in practice

Pros

There is a good community atmosphere at Future Publishing and it is easy to make friends with colleagues.
The offices are nice and well maintained, so you feel very comfortable in your environment.

Cons

It's pot luck on what type of manager you'll have and many of them are not interested in helping to develop their team. The job role of 'Editor' is considered an illustrious position where you don't have to do much work, and is generally only earned by people who have been in the company many years, rather than young up-starts who may have new, fresh and innovative ideas.
There is also a 'boys club' atmosphere on many magazines, which makes women feel intimidated and pushed out.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management need to appreciate the work that their team does and recognise it. Often many editors take recognition for work that isn't theirs and won't pass on praise to others.

Working with nice, talented people, good benefits, bagels on Fridays.

    Cons

Management doesn't really know which direction to go in, brands are too fragmented and not enough free collaboration

Future has been a brilliant place to work, now needs to emerge reinvigorated from large restructure / redundancy plan

I worked at Future Publishing Limited full-time

    Pros

It's always been like a huge (albeit now smaller) family. There's always been a strong culture of togetherness and socialising among 'shop floor' employees. New board must ensure that new reality of downsized company maintains that. Bath is a great city to be part of.

    Cons

Like all media companies with a strong reliance on print, it's tough to keep revenues up in a declining market. Attempts to find a profitable alternative have foundered so far hence sales of some well-loved titles. There is new senior management in place which is yet to prove it has the answer, although one could apply that to most media companies in this digital world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Share the plan, whatever it is, with the employees. There are still lots of strong people there - make sure all strands of business are connected and committed to the goal.
