I have been working at GE Global Research full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Work with some of the best minds in different scientific disciplines, great work-life balance, relative flexibility fo do risky research

Cons

"process" driven company, lot of inertia in terms of quickly moving an idea into product, nobody publicly reports any failed experiments inspite of this being an R&D site - goes to show how folks have to be tactful with presenting their work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simplify the day to day "processes" and make EMS a *real* exercise - not something that one can master after a few years of experience.

Great learning opportunities, fun work, some bureaucracy

I have been working at GE Global Research full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Collegial environment; exceptionally friendly people across the entire center. Interesting projects with potential to make substantial differences in a vast array of applications. Generally a stimulating environment with wonderful learning opportunities and ability to do R&D. Ability to influence your own research agenda and have some fun working for a good organization. Wonderful leadership at the center. Great work-life balance and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

    Cons

Frequent reorganizations and a lot of buzzwords with little substance. Some lab managers (mine, for instance) are MBAs who oversee engineers and scientists which is problematic to say the least. Too many principles are promoted only on seniority. Many GE businesses are run by spreadsheet and phone calls that are too risk averse to adapt new technologies - very frustrating to see your hard work get squashed by layers of bureaucracy. Promotion is very difficult and again often not based on merit. While benefits are generally fine, health benefits lag a bit. Area is fine, but be aware this is not a big city.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Messages from senior management are too fluid; we are seemingly given a new flashy buzzword every week without any real meaning. Too much time is wasted in meetings and doing administrative work. Try to force the old-timers who have plateaued to either move on to non-tech roles or keep more up do date with their respective fields. Try to find better incentives to keep your best and brightest talent, and allow the best researchers some more personal research time. Adopt a more casual dress code and a more liberal work from home policy.
