I worked at GE Oil & Gas full-time (less than an year)

Pros

Large company with the ability to transfer to other business units. Constantly gaining new businesses to integrate and grow.

Cons

Human resources runs the company. Red carpet type treatment for these subpar individuals. Large company so the time it takes to get something done is longer than the federal government. Resistant to change even if the idea is better. Read the contract because you are just a number so if you leave they will destroy you and not think twice about the person. Any support is farmed out to India so if you have a computer or tech problem......good luck. Pay is less than anyone else in the industry so if you expect to hire on and grow your salary, good luck. Its a safe bet to look else where and as a last resort only if Wal-Mart is not hiring should you take a job with this group. Take a look at the stats for yourself don't take my word for it.

Excellent career opportunities in a solid company hindered by bureucracy and sloppy acquisition assimilation.

I have been working at GE Oil & Gas full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent career, training, and networking possibilities. GE is a huge and powerful company and as such provides their staff with plenty of resources to complete their jobs. As an employee, you can be confident that your company will still be around tomorrow. Capital expenditures are not a limitation to technology or efficiency advancements.

    Cons

Being a huge company, it is weighed down by internal barriers to completing day to day tasks. IT support and purchasing apparently benefit from economies of scale but it is very frustrating when it takes days for someone to address a computer problem and days to purchase something that I could drive to the store and have in fifteen minutes. Also, being a company founded on acquisitions, there are many growing pains as companies are combined, assimilated, reorganized, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue with the simplification initiatives. This should be your primary goal. Mundane processes absolutely kill productivity and cripple projects. Sometimes it feels like working against the company to complete mundane tasks. Focus on making the daily things like IT and purchasing easier so we can focus on executing projects and improving our products and execution.
