Pros

- interns receive excellent accommodation- my single room could have easily fit three to four people alone - GE paired interns up together and fostered a great sense of community among them- organized dodgeball tournaments, tours of GE facilities, dinner outings, and even allowed GE corporate interns to meet interns from other sectors of GE often - GE reimburses a lot of your travel expenses and sometimes people profit from these reimbursements - GE really promotes diversity in the workplace which is amazing as you meet people from all over the world here and not fee discriminated

Cons

- for an IT program, many of the employees surprisingly were not very technical in their backgrounds- many actually came from business or marketing backgrounds with a minor in IT or computer science - while GE claimed that it encouraged open communication among its employees, due to its large size(300,000 employees) and hierarchy, it wasn't that simple...then again, I am sure this is the case with many other big companies of GE's size - a very strong emphasis on networking...sometimes to the extent that you had to play politics more than actually demonstrate your talents at your job...people who were loud, asked more questions, and met with the program manager frequently tended to get more noticed and more likely to receive offers even if they did not necessarily contribute any substantial material - a very strong emphasis on making your powerpoint presentation look nice and brief- limited to two to three slides- this was hard for people who may have taken on more projects than others as they could not present the scope of their hard work over the summer and could have been seen as doing the same amount of work as someone with fewer projects as a result

Advice to Management

evaluate people more on how they contribute to the company rather than how many times they politic with you also recruit more talented folks in the IT sector- perhaps a good start would be to not recruit mostly marketing majors and instead target computer science backgrounds instead do not have three random people in the company decide whether you get a full time offer or not at the end of the summer...increase the role of your mentor in this process
