Former Employee - Correctional Officer  in  Big Spring, TX
Former Employee - Correctional Officer in Big Spring, TX

I worked at GEO Group full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great benefits and pay. Easy job. Not like any prison movie you've seen, it's very different. Great if you love working outdoors.

    Cons

Long hours. 12-16 hour shifts. Located in Big Spring, TX. Some staff highly rude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some officers need more experience on the job they are doing. S.O.'s have no knowledge of how to communicate.

I have been working at GEO Group part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Varied and quite interesting population. Terrific co-workers. Brand-new building with plenty of space. Somewhat flexible in terms of scheduling my work hours.

    Cons

Rampant greed, stupidity, short-sightedness and cronyism in the administration. Not enough parking, dangerous lack of ice and snow removal during winter months. Lack of training. Lack of understanding of good correctional practice and professional behavior on the part of the higher-ups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get with the times and run your facilities right - don't let the inmates run the institution as a "cost savings" measure. This puts staff at risk, and is just wrong-headed. You might want to consider reducing bonuses and increasing staff base pay.
