I worked at GSI Group

Pros

Flexible toward work / life balance, great employees, decent teamwork ethic, highly intelligent engineers, okay benefits, convenient location, nice facility

Cons

Senior management destroyed this company through an extremely risky, debt-laden acquisition just as the economy started to tank in 2008. Current CEO has destroyed a company that took decades to build. His absentee leadership has driven this company into a ditch and epitomizes all that is wrong with American corporate leadership. As a result, staff is demoralized, mandatory furloughs are common, as well as pay and benefit cuts. Add on top a general decline in US based manufacturing and you have a perfect storm for a zombie, bankrupt company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

CEO please leave. You are not qualified to run this company and have long since lost the confidence of your team. Check out the stock price from about 2004 to now. The market agrees.

It used to be a great place to work. Still technically challenging

    Pros

GSI has been a great place to work for many years. The technical challenges are very rewarding, and the quality of the engineers is top notch. GSI is generally a very laid back environment and management is understanding of the flexibility that is often needed in life.
When times are good there is the potential to make more in bonus and profit sharing.

    Cons

GSI is changing with new management. It is not the same place that it used to be. Hopefully it will be able to survive these tough economic times. In bad economic years occasional furloughs and forced time off = 5-10% salary cut. Benfits are being cut to improve the company's bottom line, and employees are not particularly happy about that.

I have been working at GSI Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The company has renewed the management team in many areas. Very competent and building a strong company
You really feel you are making an impact
You can wear multiple hats which increases the learning experience and potentially career growth
It is a small company getting bigger so you can still have the feel of a small company and have an entrepreneur mind set
You are empowered to make change happen
    Benefits are good

    Cons

There is not real cons I see at this stage.
There is a lot of work as other reviews suggest but then it is a job so you would expect this. The company is growing so it means that we have to work hard to get there. A lot of work yes but with a sentiment of satisfaction at the end of the day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work
Put teams and customers even further at the center of what we do.
