Retail is much harder than people think, but can be rewarding if you really like people

Current Employee - Assistant Store Manager in Baltimore, MD
Current Employee - Assistant Store Manager in Baltimore, MD

I have been working at GameStop

Pros

to learn about gaming, to be involved with gaming, for the opportunity to work with other gamers, employee discount, employees can borrow games, great opportunity to build people skills and customer service skills, opportunities to help wide array of customers (not just nerdy gamers anymore), from families to grandparents to kids (DON'T be a gamer snob and continuously put down Wii etc games, there's no room for you in Gamestop anymore, gaming has changed too much)

Cons

Poor pay, risk of being robbed, actually fairly stressful, VERY detail-oriented - need to be very on top of your work, store operations are very important, fairly inconsistent scheduling, relatively poor communications from Store Mgmt and District Management (but this varies by individual), somewhat unreasonable pressure to hit subscriptions and reservations targets without any incentive - there are NO commissions at Gamestop

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep all levels of store employees informed, be realistic about goals, provide better sales tools and training, provide more regular recognition, promote from within, stop pressuring about hitting reservation and subscriptions targets unless you are prepared to offer better sales tools and some level of incentives that are realistically obtainable

    Pros

They offer good benefits as far as that goes, but then try to sell how great your low salary is by showing their cost of the benefits offered.

    Cons

It's great if you've either been there forever or start out at a director level or above. All other long term low/mid level employees have lower than avg salaries to comphensate for the "haves".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Why not share some of the option cash you get each year with the grunts that got it for you.

Current Employee - Store Manager in Astoria, NY

I have been working at GameStop

    Pros

employee discount is definitely a plus if you are a gamer. Used prices plus employee discount means good deals. schedule flexibility if you are a store manager. You can choose to close or open. It is all dependent on your support staff (asst. mgt) if you have a good crew you can all find an ideal schedule.
social atmosphere is good. most shoppers are enthusiastic and helping them get what they want is a joy.

    Cons

customers are cruel and irrational sometimes like in all retail environments.
low starting wage means it is hard to find good quality employees. The minimum wage starting point results in slacker basement kids who are being forced by parents to get a job and they have no dedication or accountability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

work with us and we'll work with you. we need to inter cooperate more as districts. Too much competition amongst store managers makes it a hostile and toxic environment
