Former Employee - Assistant Store Manager in Lexington, KY

I worked at GameStop full-time for more than a year

Pros

Fun working environment. You get paid to talk about video games with people.
Nice employee discount.
Benefits for both full and part time employees are very good.
Game check out program saves you a lot of money and makes it so you can know your product better.
The company does it's best to evolve with the industry.
If you work hard, and follow policy, you will get promoted.

Cons

Very high pressure sales. Not a good place to work if you can't handle this.
Unless you are management, chances are you won't be steadily employed. Very little hours are available to go around to part timers.
For the type of performance they want, they really do pay very little.
Fairly high turnover rate in management.
Inconsistent employee coaching system - seems very arbitrary at times.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer actual incentives to employees for sales performance.
A better management training system would help prevent the extremely high turnover rate in that area.
Better pay for store managers may help you retain more quality people.

I have been working at GameStop

    Pros

The job is easy, and the day-to-day is fun if you make it fun. Newly developed training program for all levels of store staff is excellent.

    Cons

The only incentive given to hit sales targets is to keep your job. Bonus structure for store managers is extremely small ($100-400); however the senior management of the company receives millions of dollars in bonuses. For part-time employees, payroll budgeting allows for 1-2 shifts a week, which is not enough to support yourself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Morale is terrible. Treat your employees better, instead of just pretending to do so. I've never met a former employee who was able to speak nicely of the company, even if they left on a good note.

I worked at GameStop part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good Direct management, most of the interactions with customers were good. Good co-workers

    Cons

Anyone over my direct manager was clueless to the sort of business done in my location.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You catch more flys with hunny than vinegar, the threats just became noise after a while.
