Current Employee - Senior Game Advisor in Baltimore, MD
Current Employee - Senior Game Advisor in Baltimore, MD

I have been working at GameStop full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Great work environment, great bene's part and full time, awesome management, discounts are pretty sweet, rental perk is also awesome. This is the best job I have had as far as a cohesive work environment that is stimulating with obtainable goals.

Cons

Hours get very sparse come summer. Other then that the only con I can admit to is the lack of full time possibilities and the amount of effort needed to obtain them is a tad excessive.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gamestop is the way to go when working the retail end of video games, but there's not much after the basics.

I worked at GameStop part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If your a gaming enthusiast, or just want to learn more about the industry and trends on a retail and social level, working here will definitely increase your knowledge on the gaming market. The hours are amazingly flexible, and if you're ever curious about trying games, employees are offered a discount on used games.

    Cons

While the hours are very flexible, it's generally because there are none: Game Advisors usually have three work-days a week, plus special releases (i.e. midnight releases). It's not a position that you can rely on to pay the monthly bills.

Former Employee - Store Manager in Dover, DE

I worked at GameStop full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Everything you have to upsell is what the customer already wants; you just have to explain the benefits to get them to say 'yes'. Store Managers and above get flown out for an annual conference and have venders 'throw' free swag at you is the best. They hold contests regularly to add incentives for selling certain products or pushing certain metrics. Great benefits, bonus', and 401k plan. The company is very innovative. As technology and the market changes so does GameStop.

    Cons

As a salaried Store Manager they make you go beyond what is set up in the job description with how many hours/days you are 'required' to work. When times get tough they resort to lowering store hours and forcing the Store Manager to work six days a week on top of the requried six day work weeks in December. The amount of tasks assigned, stock inflow, and added jobs like overnights are not reduced during those 'tough times' to help the associates focus on the customers. For hourly associates they are underpaid for the job they are required to do in comparison to similar retail companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More emphasis on the 'Human' aspect of 'Human Resources' is needed on all levels. Make your employees feel they are appriciated by thanking them one in a while.
