No opinion of CEO

Pros

Opportunities for personal and technical training were good. Ability to get involved in cross-division projects and expand your exposure.

Cons

Benefits were good although costs were high for health and continued to rise and management always offset costs to employees. Very political environment. Very financially structured. The almighty buck is the only motivator in the company. Be good or be gone, Gannett is and has been downsizing for some time and no job is secure. Promotions are based more on how you are needed than what you deserve. I have seen them over and over promote people into positions they were not ready for and fire them once they failed.

Advice to Management

Have more respect for your employees and the hard work they do for you. Recognize good employees at all levels, not just senior management.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Exciting, fast paced and ever changing as they try to compete and find revenue streams in the face of dying circulation numbers. Great teams that love the business but without a voice that Management hears. They have responded well with CareerBuilder.com (which is a joint effort with other major newspaper chains), but have not found answers to their other two major revenue streams (Real Estate and Auto)

    Cons

Dying industry, Gannet was too slow to react to the internet and instant news. Too focused on today's bottom-line to invest in the future of their business, and in many cases have become nothing more than a glorified delivery service of print media and print ads.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your team and your customers and respond quickly

  2. Gannett is simplistic in it's approach to serious journalism at many of it's papers and t.v. stations.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

It's a company that tends to be more focused on journalism per se...and that tends to keep things professional and steady, not too focused on the immediate, short-term, but more on quality, performance and results over time (both personally and the entire newsroom.) Note, this does not apply to financial considerations with the company.

    Cons

Gannett's operations may be focused on journalism, but it tends to be a rather light, less consequential focus. It's brand of journalism is very much 'USA Today;' more flashy and simplistic. It ain't the NY Times. But having said that, it can mean a more serious devotion to 'real' news than many stations in local markets. Less flash and trash, more 'human interest' reporting, etc.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the long-term. Don't manage for the next quarter, but for the next ten years.
