I worked at Gannett full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Hours at corporate aren't too bad and can be flexible when needed.
People were generally easy to work with and willing to contribute to get things done.
Facilities at McLean are very nice.

Cons

Newspaper business is hurting, which impacts everyone, regardless of individual performance.
There are a few people that don't pull their weight and will be there forever.
Furloughs for everyone are the right decision, but still hurt when you are doing well.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to reward individual contributors and weed out some of those who may not be pulling their weight.

Great place to work if you don't care about quality

I worked at Gannett full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

For the newspaper industry, the pay can be good, but only if you negotiate an excellent deal upfront. There is some chance of mobility within the company if you are willing to move.

    Cons

Constant cost cutting; no concern for quality of the product; poor management at corporate and local levels; layoffs are frequent and remaining employees are given a ridiculously high workload

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micromanaging. Media is highly personal and trying to homogenize newspapers and TV stations is a recipe for disaster. The fact that something works in Detroit doesn't mean it will work in Nashville. Also, many site managers are terrible. I would recommend replacing them, but I'm not sure that will do any good unless corporate management is also replaced.
