Pros

It is not difficult to get hired at The Gap, you don't need to have much prior job experience. They provide training on site and the work is not too labor intensive, unless there is a major sale. It allows you to interact with a lot of people, which can be a good or bad thing. At least in my experience, my co-workers are friendly and easy going.

Cons

The pay is not great, entry level wages. You do get an employee discount but The Gap doesn't have great clothes.

Advice to Management

Communicate more with the staff.

This is a great brand, with great people facing some big challenges and therefore offering opportunity to add value.

    Pros

The people are the reason and working for iconic brands can be exciting and challenging.

    Cons

The leadership can't stick to a strategy for long enough to evaluate whether the strategy will work. They are big and want everything cheaper, faster AND better when anyone will tell you that you can have two but never all three at the same time. The effect of demanding all three from your workers and vendors is that you damage your partnerships.

    Advice to Management

Make a change in one of the variables and then evaluate the effects over a six month period. A month and a half is not long enough to know whether your strategy is working especially when it takes two weeks to get the change into the stores.

  2. Great staff training but lacks trust in field management decisions.

    Pros

In depth staff training and development, not only for the front line staff but management development, as well. The print resources for product knowledge training is always very helpful, including for managers. Growth potential within the company is a positive as well. The employee discount is a plus.

    Cons

The erratic changes, including, but not limited to changes in field management structure, price changes, merchandising changes that conflict what is best for the retail location. Exceptionally long work hours and resistance to grant earned vacation time. Also that the company has a less than desirable opinion from environmental groups and human rights organizations.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and trust your Field Management Teams, including store level management. Store visits should be positive, not a fear-based approach.
