I have been working at Gartner full-time for more than a year

Pros

Good benefits, sales focused organization, work/life balance

Cons

under market compensation (accelerators are good, but not as many people are making their #s as you'd think - maybe 35%?)

They like to hire young people (mid-30s and younger) for sales, and they'll tell you that, too. The result is a very eager sales force that isn't taken seriously by CxO executives. The 'rah rah' part of the job tends to be a little JV.....

Over confidence in some product sets. Clients pay a premium for the services and don't always get the corresponding value.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Of course advisory services need to scale, but moving away from fact to face and towards phone or web interactions de-personalizes the services. Clients want to see the analysts. Pay more attention to consulting. The margins and scale aren't as sexy, but the consulting engagements are the ones that put Gartner higher up the value chain. Increase compensation by 15-20% and you will get better talent - not just inexpensive, eager talent.

I have been working at Gartner full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Collegial culture with intellectual rigor, which is a result of its Research heritage, creates an attractive environment for personal growth. Career path opportunities are endless across the entire company. Still behaves like a growth company with young aspiring smart professional people. Company is still hiring aggressively while other professional firms entrenched over last five years. Stock has done very well and has been rewarded by Wall Street due to its strong leadership and management. This is a place to come to for the rest of your career or as a valuable stop along the way. Many former Gartner employees return which is a testament to the company as a desirable place to work.

    Cons

Use to provide stock options to reward many employees. Now only provides a stock purchase program similar to other organizations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep pursuing current goals and objectives. While evolving the company to meet the demands of a changing IT advisory environment, make sure the unique Gartner culture is not slowly eroded over time. A culture of open, honest, and professional debate where competing ideas are rewarded and flourish in a collegial atmosphere of trust and respect. Other companies talk it, Gartner has been able to walk it. It would be tragic if this someday becomes mis-aligned.
