I have been working at Gartner full-time for more than a year

Pros

- Good people. Gartner prides itself on hiring intelligent, self motivated and driven individuals and provides you with the opportunity to drive your own career.
- Room for improvement. Gartner openly acknowledges it can and needs to get better and embraces employee contributions to accomplish this. They empower you to take a hands on role in new initiatives and processes.
- Gartner actively listens to its employees and values your opinion

Cons

- Company is very numbers driven and often makes decisions based upon numbers to the street and not whats best for the business.
- Sales and Research are king. Other business units are not always treated with the same degree of importance (not interest in advertising consulting or putting in the same type of effort to build the consulting practice)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The best companies don't manage to the expectations of the street. Do what is best for each business unit and the rest will take care of itself.

I have been working at Gartner full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent benefits, generous amount of PTO and well-respected brand

    Cons

Not enough growth potential (career or financial), very micro-managed, they are hiring in less and less experienced Client Partners at lower salaries and so the level of professional experience in the Client Partner Group is declining.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teach your VPs how to act when at a company outing in public. For example, on one of our last outings a VP in the HTTP group LOST his cell phone and then accused people of stealing it. He made the amusement park we were at ask all of their employees if they stole his iPhone. It was mortifying to be associated with this type of behavior. Start checking the egos of your management and VPs.

I have been working at Gartner full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Brand recognition with CxO decision makers
    - Market leader
    - Analysts, consultants and executive partners are very sales friendly
    - Bonuses and accelerators are attractive but can dry up after a couple good years
    - Great events

    Cons

    - hiring too many AEs, contracting the territories
    - risk is high and rewards can be low after a good year
    - many territories are very mature and are loaded up with products, so growth is nearly impossible
    - the money is not as good as it was a few years ago, top performers earning less and maybe 1/3 are making their quotas
    - Lots of churn and high turnover of sales in major accounts
    - Career opportunities are very limited for work-at-home remote areas
    - Some very absurd rules of engagement on territories, seat locations, sales credits, etc.
    - Too many AEs working multi-location accounts with different agendas

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Reduce the shared account complexity with so many AEs calling into same organization in different locations
    - Rules of engagement are bad for customers
    - Why are you hiring more and more reps and contracting territories when most aren't making the numbers?
